Toronto sketch comic experiences a boom, books Colin Mochrie
November 2009 - www.examiner.com
While many comedians wait for their turn on stage, sketch comic and producer Dan Galea makes his own opportunities. A graduate of the Humber College Comedy Program, and now a seasoned sketch performer on the Toronto comedy scene since 2001, Galea co-produces, co-writes and directs the popular Toronto institution, The Boom Show.
I recently had a chat with Galea and asked him how he got where he is today, where he hopes to go and how he began.

Everybody wants comedy troupe The Boom - except the Don Jail
April 2009
For most of us, getting into prison isn't especially hard. Try it sometime. With a bit of effort and a blunt object, a guy can usually land on the wrong side of the bars faster'n you can say "assault with intent." Not so for The Boom, the sketch and video troupe that, in a bid to flex its comedic muscles, recently tried to find work at the Don Jail.

2009 MARCH > THE BOOM BIRTHDAY SHOW
On February 5th, the sketch troupe THE BOOM performed a huge birthday show at the Supermarket Lounge in Kensington Market. Featuring guest performers like Nikki Payne and many others, the troupe has just returned from filming a pilot with Comedy Central in New York and flew through a series of high-energy and totally hilarious sketches. The show also featured several stand up comics, including Boyd Banks and David Andrew Brent, who also performed as the DJ - stitching sketches together. The enthusiastic crowd filled the stage area of the lounge until the end of the night, and left holding their sides from laughter.
Just to clear something up, The Boom did not shoot a pilot with comedy central, we were supposed to film a pilot to be pitched to comedy central, but that was put on hold for a couple of months. - Dan Galea

THE BOOM BIRTHDAY SHOW
FEB 5, SUPERMARKET
Capping off a triumphant year of repeatedly sold-out shows, this 11-member sketch-comedy troupe (once awesomely branded "Boom-shaka-laka") actually follows through on their pledge to present irreverent humour. (Anyone who can make a superhero mock-up of "Two Girls, One Cup" is foully entertaining in our books.) Enjoy them while you can -- these up-and-comers are about to shoot a pilot for Comedy Central in NYC. Featuring guests Nikki Payne, Boyd Banks and more. Thu 8:30pm. $10. 268 Augusta. 416-840-0501.

February 2009
THE BOOM is a local skit gang (a title they prefer over sketch troupe) who are celebrating 12 months of consistently sold out shows and gritty, edge-of-your-seat comedy with their Birthday Show tomorrow (Thursday) night.
The 11-cast-member gang perform innovative sketch comedy, film shorts, stand-up and musical acts the first Thursday of ever month at Supermarket.
Scheduled to join THE BOOM are special guests Nikki Payne, Boyd Banks, Darren Frost, Paul Belini, Mark Forward and more of the best in Canadian comedy. Payne had me in stitches when I saw her recently at The Comedy Bar, where she was workshopping My Big Fat Donated Kidney.
I caught up with THE BOOM head writer and producer Dan Galea for a Q & A about his skit gang.

February 2009
Local Toronto skit gang, THE BOOM celebrates twelve months of consistent sold out shows and gritty, edge of your seat comedy with THE BOOM Birthday Show on Thursday, February 5 at Supermarket - 268 Augusta Avenue (just south of College Street between Bathurst and Spadina) - 8:30pm. Scheduled to join THE BOOM are special guests; Nikki Payne, Boyd Banks, Darren Frost, Paul Belini, Mark Forward and more of the best in Canadian comedy.
THE BOOM, formerly "Boom-shaka-laka" has plenty to celebrate these days. After exploding onto the Toronto comedy scene in 2008, THE BOOM has evolved into one of Toronto 's favorite skit gangs. With an uncensored perspective and raw approach to comedy writing and performing, it is no wonder this 11 cast member gang, has earned one of the largest fan bases in the city and the ever expanding respect of the comedy community. It is all the things we think but dare not say up on stage. It is this new genre of comedy that has most recently earned THE BOOM an invitation to perform and pitch in NYC at the end of January.
THE BOOM continues to impress audiences with brand new shows and original, ground-breaking skietches every month. Keeping with the dark and edgy tone of each show, previous guest hosts have included Jason Rouse, Ryan Dennee and Dave Marheje plus music acts Preposterous and regular spins from resident BOOM DJ "The Dirt Bike Kid. "
"We just wanted to put out something different, unapologetically edgy and most importantly something that was funny" exclaims Boom head writer and Producer, Dan Galea. "and we did it!!"
THE BOOM is an 11 member skit gang based out of Toronto , Ontario . THE BOOM Show, appearing every month at Supermarket, features innovative sketch comedy, film shorts, stand-up and musical acts has made THE BOOM a force to be reckoned with.
